Lucknow: The airport in Ayodhya, set to be inaugurated on Saturday, will now bear the name “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport Ayodhya Dham.” Formerly known as the “Maryada Purshottam Shri Ram Ayodhya International Airport,” the renaming pays homage to the legendary poet Valmiki, renowned as the author of the epic Ramayana.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the newly constructed airport on December 30, just days before the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which is set to take place on January 22, 2024.

IndiGo and Air India Express will operate the first flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad to Ayodhya, starting in January 2024. The airport’s initial construction phase cost approximately Rs 1,450 crore.

The new terminal building, covering 6,500 square meters, is designed to accommodate 600 peak-hour passengers, with an annual handling capacity of 10 lakh passengers. Plans for the second phase include the construction of a larger terminal building spanning 50,000 square meters, capable of handling 3,000 passengers during peak hours and 60 lakh passengers annually.
