Maharashtra: In a shocking revelation, MPhils and post graduates were the ones who had applied for porters’ posts when the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) recently invited applications for the same!

As known, India does have unemployment problems, but the present educated unemployment situation in Maharashtra, is just worse.

MPSC had invited applications for the posts of five porters. Reportedly, over 2,500 candidates had applied for the group D post. Shocking and surprising as it would be, 5 candidates with MPhils, 253 postgraduates and 984 graduates were among the applicants.

For a post which the qualification required was just Class IV pass, only 177 have had an education less than SSC. The MPSC, which initially was planning to hold interviews for the job, has now decided to hold a state level written exam because of the sheer number of applicants. The exam will be held in August.

According to Counsellor Vivek Velankar, it is the thought of being unemployed that makes one take such decisions.

Maharashtra is the not the first State witnessing this situation. Amroha municipality in UP had similar experience when they had invited application for the post of sweepers. Around 19,000 applications with BA, BSc, MA, BTechs and MBAs were received. Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan too received 75,000 and 23,600 applications for 30 and five peon posts respectively.
