New Delhi: Tension among various sections of society are rising as the Lok Sabha elections are nearing.

While at a rally in Wardha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at AICC President Rahul Gandhi for choosing to contest from Amethi and Wayanad, saying that he was afraid of the Hindus. He then laid blame on the Congress party for using the ‘Hindu terror’ rhetoric in the past in order to win over the voters.

To hit his point home, the PM said that nowhere in history would one find instances where Hindus were the perpetrators of “such terrorist activities”, going further as to say that even the Britishers did not consider them as terrorists.

With the progress of technology, people are becoming more politically inclined and opinionated, armed with gumption and access to readily available information and ready to fact-check or criticise politicians. More than happy to correct the prime minister, the Twitterati quickly picked apart his monologue, many of whom contradicted him. They pointed to (at least) one known “Hindu terrorist”- the now infamous Nathuram Godse.

Nathuram Godse was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He followed the ideology of the extreme right and was a critic of Gandhiji’s secular policies. In 1948, he assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, for which he was hanged in 1949.
