New Delhi: For the first time, the Trinamool Congress is set to join opposition parties that plan to move amendments against President Ram Nath Kovind’s parliamentary speech hailing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

A Motion of Thanks, with respect to the President’s speech, will be introduced in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha sessions today on Monday, February 3.

Members of several opposition parties, along with the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, seek to protest against the newly-implemented CAA legislation through various means.

Apart from criticising the President’s speech, the dissenting lawmakers are also seeking to suspend zero hour and business hour in the Parliament in order to further deliberate the issue.

It can be recalled that President Kovind, in his speech to Parliament on January 31, had mentioned that the contentious CAA was the will of Mahatma Gandhi. which the government had fulfilled. In response, opposition parties jointly expressed their objection by sloganeering “shame, shame”, that reverberated in the Central Hall of Parliament on that day.

Surprisingly, this will be the first time in TMC’s history that its MPs look to move amendments against the President’s speech. TMC MPs Mahua Moitra and Sougata Roy are likely to present the party’s remarks in Lok Sabha.
