The latest rain in the catchment areas has given both states some relief and hope amid increased tension in Karnataka over the required flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Prolonged rainfall in the districts of Kodagu, Mysuru, and Mandya has resulted in an inflow of around 2,000 cusecs into the dams of Harangi and KRS. It is anticipated that the rain will continue throughout next week.
The Cauvery delta districts in Tamil Nadu, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Karur and Tiruchirappalli below Metturcontinued to receive widespread rain.
On Saturday, further rain is predicted in the area. There, officials declared a holiday for certain districts’ institutions and schools due to excessive rain. Farmers in Tamil Nadu are crossing their fingers over the potential effects of the monsoon on samba crops, which are mature and ready to be harvested in the first week of December. Additionally, Karnataka hopes that more water from the uncontrolled catchment area in the Ramanagara districts between Mandya and Kanakpura will make its way to Biligundlu.
The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) requested on Thursday that Karnataka guarantee the release of 3,216 cusecs per day of water into the Cauvery at Biligundlu for a period of 38 days starting on November 24.
Karnataka has been following orders to release water out of fear of punishment from the Supreme Court. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) judgment has been the subject of appeals by the government to the Supreme Court. “Karnataka is facing 52% shortfall in cumulative inflow to its Cauvery basin reservoirs till November 25,” stated a government official.
