Mumbai: In a horrific incident, a teenager burned to death when a fire broke out in an apartment within a police station compound in Dadar, Mumbai. The incident was reported to have occurred on Sunday when she wasn’t able to rush to safety when the fire broke out as she was locked in her room by her parents to force her to study.

The deceased has been identified as Shravani Chavan (16). Her father is a police naik at the Vakola police station.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the police said that the parents had locked her in the room and left for a wedding.

The fire is said to have broken out at 1.45 PM on one of the quarters on the third floor of the building located in the Dadar police station compound. The fire brigade personnel managed to douse the flames after about three hours of effort.

A Fire Brigade official said that the door to the girl’s room was locked from inside and an empty can of kerosene was found at the spot. Several electrical wirings, fixtures and other household items were also destroyed in the fire.

She was seriously injured and was rushed to the Sion Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The officials suspect that a short-circuit in the air conditioning unit installed in the apartment caused the fire. A probe into the incident is underway. They are also investigating the presence of the kerosene can in the flat, the police said.
