Chennai: In Chennai on Tuesday, a startling incident unfolded aboard a government bus as a female passenger fell through a gap in the floor when the boarding beneath her seat gave way. The event occurred on route number 59, en route from Vallalar Nagar to Thiruverkadu, near the Amijikarai area.
Prompt action from fellow passengers prevented a potential tragedy as they alerted the driver and managed to halt the bus before the woman could be harmed by its wheels. Once the bus stopped, she was safely released.
Concerned passengers confronted the bus driver and conductor about their apparent ignorance of the bus’s deteriorating condition, highlighting questions regarding vehicle maintenance.

Authorities swiftly responded, with police and transport department officials launching an investigation at the scene. The remaining passengers were promptly transferred to another bus while inquiries continue.
Reacting to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai used it as a critique of the DMK government’s governance. He emphasized the hazards associated with poorly maintained buses, citing issues like water leakage and broken seats. Annamalai criticized the apparent neglect from the transport department and raised concerns about the allocation of taxpayer funds.
“The incident raises questions about the utilization of public funds. The focus should not only be on potential avenues for corruption within the transport sector but also on ensuring the proper maintenance of government buses,” he asserted.
