Tamil Actor and DMDK Chief Vijayakanth Passes Away at 71

Chennai: Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief, Vijayakanth, aged 71, has succumbed to illness at a private hospital in Chennai. The actor-politician had been on ventilator support after testing positive for Covid-19, according to his party. However, the hospital’s statement cited pneumonia as the cause of his demise.

The hospital’s official statement reads, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023.”

Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a routine health check-up. Initially, the party had asserted that he was in good health and would return home after the tests.

Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Vijayakanth’s contributions to Tamil cinema and politics. Modi described him as a legend whose charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. He also praised Vijayakanth’s commitment to public service, noting the impact he had on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

The passing of Vijayakanth, a popular figure in Tamil cinema and politics, marks the end of an era. The news has sparked expressions of grief from fans, political figures, and the entertainment industry. Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam has visited Vijayakanth’s residence in Chennai to offer condolences to the bereaved family.
