Supreme Court says No to FIR on PM in Coal Scam

New Delhi(DC) :The Supreme court on Tuesday rejected a plea to make Prime minister Manmohan Singh a party in the coal scam and to name him in the FIR.

The Supreme Court, however, allowed CBI to share its status report with two in-house prosecutors before their presentation in court.

During the review, CBI officials told the apex court that it is yet to get two Coal Ministry files, including one on the minutes of the screening committee.

The PMs name was dragged into the scam after former coal secretary P C Parakh had objected to his naming in the CBI FIR with regard to allocation of coal blocks to Hindalco, a Birla subsidiary.

Denying that Hindalco was favoured above other firms, he said he had only recommended the name of Hindalco, but it was the Prime Minister who had approved the allocation. “If I am an accused, then PM should also be named an accused,” he had said.

The CBI had also named Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla.

On further action, the court said the probe is on and the CBI will look into it. The apex has asked the CBI to file the next status report by January 9, 2014.
