Rescue under way, Earthquake kills 216 in Pakistan

Islamabad: The death toll from a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern Pakistan climbed to 216, officials said on Wednesday.

Tuesdays quake killed 208 people in Awaran district of Balochistan province, which was the epicentre.

At least eight people were killed in neighbouring Turbat district, said Jan Muhammed Buledi, provincial government spokesman.

This figure may go up as reports from remote areas are still to come,said Buledi from the provincial capital Quetta.

More than 350 people were injured, he added.

The quake struck south and southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday afternoon and was felt as far away as the Indian capital New Delhi.

Buledi said the Pakistani military was leading a rescue mission in the area.
