Rahul Gandhi visits Kolkata flyover collapse site, meets victims

Kolkata: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday visited the site of under-construction flyover collapse which left 26 people dead and hundreds others injured. He also visited the victims at a hospital.

Speaking to reporters Rahul said, “I came to the hospital and gave them (those injured) my support. It is a tragedy and I do not want to talk anything related to politics here.”

Following the tragedy three employees of the company building the flyover were arrested in the city late on Friday evening. Two senior engineers of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority which was IVRCL’s joint venture partner in the project have been suspended. Also the police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against IVRCL.

In its defence, a government statement said: “It is apprehended that one cantilever pier no 40 has shifted due to which two spans covering three piers were affected.”

A 23-member special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to probe the disaster.
