New Delhi: Back after a 2-month long sabbatical, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally over the land acquisition bill. “Farmers are uncertain about the future of their land in India,” Rahul said.

Here are the highlights of Rahul Gandhi’s speech:

Farmers and labourers are a worried lot in India today because they feel the government has forgotten them
Farmers are afraid of the changes that are being introduced to the (land) bill we had brought in 2013
Today, when a farmer goes to bed, he doesn’t know what will happen to his land the next day. He is living in fear.
Farmers strengthened the nation before industrialists. They feed the nation.
Whenever the Congress government could help the farmers, we did it
We waived off farmers’ loans worth 70,000 crore rupees
We brought in MNREGA for the labourers
We have always worked for the poor and the weak, and we will continue to fight their battle.
The Prime Minister does not under stand the power of the farmers.
Words uttered by Modiji abroad, about cleaning 50 years of filth, don’t suit him or the office of the Prime Minister
In Gujarat Model, Modi ji showed us that he can snatch land from farmers very easily
Modi govt does not want farmers to be self-reliant. Modi want to replicate Gujarat model across India
No ‘Make in India’ is planned or being executed. Its a ploy by Modiji to grab your land.We will not allow it to happen

Here are the highlights of Sonia Gandhi’s speech:

We are here to send a strong message to the PM that ‘enough is enough’, we wont let the farmers be ignored
Rights of industrialists have been secured, not yours. Thats a big hit to your economical stature
Due to the policies of Modi sarkar, there is a widespread Urea shortage in this country
The government has refused to buy wheat of this rabi crop, but doing agreements with America and Australia for importing it

Addressing the rally, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, “Today we have collected here to oppose anti-farmer policies of Modi government.”

He said, “During poll campaigning Modiji used to go around saying they will work for farmers but nothing of that sort happened.”

“Congress has always worked for the farmers, with the farmers,” he added.

The party has also launched a website called ‘Zameen Wapsi ‘, which will aim at providing information on land acquisition.

On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi met farmers from various states, including Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, outside his 12, Tughlaq Lane, residence. During the meeting, the farmers recounted their losses and appealed for help from the Congress scion.

Earlier this week, Rahul Gandhi ended his 57-day sabbatical from politics.
