Police arrest journo for posting ‘objectionable’ content about CM Yogi

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh police, on Saturday, arrested a Delhi-based journalist named Prashant Kanojia for sharing a post about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media.

Kanojia, a freelance journalist had reportedly shared on Twitter and Facebook, a video of a woman claiming to reporters outside the CM’s office, that she had sent him a marriage proposal. According to reports, it was against this video that a Lucknow police officer filed a complaint, alleging an attempt to “malign” CM Adityanath’s image.

The journalist has been booked under section 67 of the Information Act and has also been charged with criminal defamation and making statements conducing to public mischief.

As per reports, the police picked Kanojia up from his home in Delhi’s West Vinod Nagar on Saturday afternoon and took him to Lucknow where he was formally arrested.

His arrest was condemned by many on Twitter. Siddharth Varadarajan, Founding Editor of The Wire termed the arrest as an “abuse of law”.
