Chandigarh: Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was beaten up by inmates at a Jammu jail last week in an apparent retaliation to the death of Sarabjit Singh, died on Thursday May 9 morning.

The doctors at the PGI hospital here, where Sanaullah was being treated, said the convicted terrorist died at 5.30am following multiple organ failure. He had been in coma since he was flown in here Friday May 3. On Wednesday May 8, he suffered a kidney failure.

The development adds to embarrassment for India, which stands to lose the moral high ground it had sought to take in the wake of the attack on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail on April 26. The attack on Sanaullah came a day after Singh died at a Pakistani Jail.

The fifty  two year old Sanaullah was serving life imprisonment at Jammus Kot Bhalwal Jail.

The body of the Pak prisoner will be handed over to Pakistan. We will hand over the body to Pakistan, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde said. Shinde said the ministry of external affairs is coordinating with the Pakistani authorities to complete the formalities to send back his body home.

Once the formalities are done, we will hand over the body, he said. Two members of Sanaullahs family had arrived here from Pakistan on Tuesday May 7.

The sources said a detailed post mortem of Sanaullah, would be done in Chandigarh and the travel arrangements would be made as per the request made by Pakistan.

Government has been informed that Pakistan is arranging an aircraft to fly his body back home, the sources said, adding If they arrange a non military registered plane, the clearance would be prompt.

An official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India will facilitate Pakistans request to repatriate the body of Sanaullah and will provide necessary assistance.

In view of the tragic events, including the killing of 2 Indians in Pakistani jails and the Sanaullah incident, India has proposed that the officials of the two countries meet and take forward the recommendations of a judicial committee on humane treatment of prisoners, he said.

A Pakistani response to the proposal is awaited, the spokesperson said.
