News Delhi: Sartaj Aziz, adviser to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on national security and foreign affairs, confirmed that he will travel to India on Aug. 23 to meet with his Indian counterpart. A top Pakistani government official says Islamabad has accepted an invitation from India for a bilateral meeting between security advisers from the two nuclear-armed rival nations later this month.
This confirms that Terror and Talks will go hand-in-hand much like during the UPA regime. This government too believes that it is important to engage the Pakistan political establishment, while continuing to slam the military establishment. This twin track diplomacy is embedded in the premise that they are two separate establishments, though there is no clear proof of the same just as yet.
The announcement comes weeks after Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed on the sidelines of a summit in Russia to arrange a meeting between their security advisers. The discussions at the upcoming meeting are to focus on combating terrorism in the region. The hostility between Pakistan and India dates back seven decades, but strains have grown since PM Modi took office a year ago.
