Bhubaneswar: A 39-year-old man, identified as Satrughna Mahanta from Saraspasi village, in Odisha‘s Keonjhar district, was arrested on charges of assaulting his elderly mother. The brutal act occurred after he tied her to an electric pole for allegedly stealing a cauliflower.
The distressing incident came to light when villagers reported that the elderly woman sought medical treatment at a local hospital on Saturday. Law enforcement promptly responded, recorded her statement, and initiated an investigation. The preliminary findings confirmed the accusations against Mahanta, leading to his arrest.
The victim, aged over 60, has been living alone due to familial discord with her son. Dependent on government rations and the goodwill of villagers for sustenance, she recently sold a cauliflower from her son’s farm to a neighbor, in dire need of money.
Upon discovering this, the son subjected his mother to a brutal assault on December 20, tying her to an electric pole. The incident’s video and photos quickly went viral, sparking public outrage.
The police, acting swiftly, condemned the heinous act and took Mahanta into custody. The woman’s vulnerability, living without support, has drawn attention to the challenges faced by elderly individuals in precarious circumstances. Authorities are ensuring the safety and well-being of the victim, while the case undergoes further investigation.
