New Delhi: A Rampur court on Wednesday convicted Union minister of state for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for breaching prohibitory orders during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi along with his 19 co-accused are in the court’s custody now.
The quantum of punishment will be announced shortly.
BJP supporters are chanting slogans in support of Naqvi outside the court.
An FIR was registered against Naqvi and his supporters in 2009 during the Lok Sabha elections at Patwai police station of Rampur district.
The case relates to a demonstration by BJP workers led by Naqvi at Patwai area of Rampur parliamentary constituency at the time of campaigning for the 2009 Lok Sabha polls during which they allegedly breached the prohibitory orders in force and barged into a police station.
Naqvi and others were charged under various sections of the IPC and Criminal Law Amendment Act including those related to unlawful assembly.
