Muzaffarpur-Yeshwanthpur Express derails: 4 die, over 50 injured

Chennai : At least four passengers lost their lives and 50 others sustained injuries when  nine coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Yeshwanthpur Express bound for Yeshwanthpur  derailed at Sitheri near Arakkonam  on April 10, Wednesday morning. The accident took place at around  5.50 am.

The injured passengers have been admitted to hospitals by the rescue team of the railways. Train traffic on the   Arakkonam junction has been affected following the mishap.

A team of Railway officials from Chennai have reached the accident site and held preliminary enquiries on the cause of the mishap.The Southern Railway cancelled seven trains including Bangalore-bound Brindavan Express, Duranto Express between Chennai-Coimbatore and Kovai Express.

The West Coast Express, Coimbatore Inter-City Express and Chennai-Tiruvananthapuram mail have also been cancelled.

In a mishap that took place at the same spot in 2011, nine people were killed when the Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train rammed into the Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger from behind as it was waiting for a signal at Sitheri Station.
