Chennai: Over 300 students protested outside Madras Christian College in Chennai, after a first year student named Mahima lost her life due to mandatory sports activity.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon when Mahima was forced to take part in a sport activity despite her request to discontinue it as she had low blood pressure and suffered from anaemia. The trainer instead had told her that her health issues will be tackled if she completed one more lap of running and continued with the activities.
She was then sent for basketball practice, said a student adding that this is where she fainted. Though she was rushed to a hospital, she was declared dead.
However, when the news of her death came, the students gathered and staged a stir. Shockingly, till now no action has been taken against the staff, and there is no news of cancellation of “sports for all” event, which was scheduled to be held on Wednesday. After the incident no students were allowed inside the campus and the canteen was also shut down due to ongoing protests. According to the students, the Principal has refused to speak to the protesting students and has termed them a ‘mob’. He has asked the students to select 5-6 student representatives to hold a talk with him.
The college authorities have reportedly said that they would talk after the student’s funeral at 5 pm.
