Tata Power, a leading electric utility and electricity generation company, has outlined its robust approach to tackle the anticipated rise in electricity demand during the upcoming summer season in Mumbai. The company announced on April 3 its multifaceted plan, spanning its generation, transmission, and distribution sectors, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the city.
Utilizing advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning tools, Tata Power is closely monitoring and forecasting demand, projecting a peak demand of 1,030 MW from its consumer base in Mumbai between April and June 2024. To meet this demand, the company has instructed all contracted generating units to maintain full availability during this critical period.
In preparation for the summer months, Tata Power Mumbai Distribution has equipped its on-ground transmission and distribution service teams with comprehensive training materials and tools to maintain the efficiency and reliability of the power network. This includes detailed work instructions, checklists, and video tutorial training.
Moreover, Tata Power has bolstered its distribution services by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Auto Transfer Schemes (ATS), LoRa IoT solutions, and Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTU) in its Distribution Substations (DSS) and Customer Service Stations (CSS). The company is also conducting thermal scanning of transformers, feeder pillars, and cables to ensure effective network monitoring.
In terms of customer service, Tata Power has prepared its dedicated call centers and customer care centers to address consumers’ queries related to billing and consumption during the summer season. The company has also implemented Behavioural Demand Response (BDR) programs to enhance preparedness for potential challenges.
Furthermore, Tata Power is actively promoting energy efficiency among consumers by offering up to a 50 percent discount on new energy-efficient devices and conducting appliance exchange programs. Similar initiatives are extended to commercial and industrial consumers, including energy audits for efficient demand-side management.
To maintain reliable generation, Tata Power has completed preventive maintenance on its thermal and hydroelectric plants, with no significant outages planned during this timeframe. Additionally, the company has collaborated with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) under the demand flexibility program to optimize power usage by shifting water pumping load to non-peak and solar hours.
Tata Power’s comprehensive strategy underscores its commitment to meeting the rising electricity demand in Mumbai while ensuring efficiency, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
