Mumbai: According to an official statement on Sunday, the Mumbai police have dismantled a child trafficking network, apprehending a doctor and six accomplices responsible for the sale of an infant and a toddler.

The crime branch took into custody Dr. Sopanrao Khandare along with Vanadana Amit Pawar (28), Sheetal Ganesh Vare (41), Sneha Suryavanshi (24), Naseema Haneef Khan (28), Lata Survaade (36), and Sharad Maruti Devar (45) on Saturday, as per the official report.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Vare, a resident of Vikhroli, who allegedly sold a five-month-old baby for ₹2 lakh. Vare was apprehended in Govandi, leading to the subsequent arrest of Dr. Khandare, who allegedly facilitated the sale of the infant. The rescued baby was found in Guhagar, Ratnagiri.

Further investigations uncovered the sale of a two-year-old girl, who was also rescued, according to the official.

The group is suspected of trafficking children in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, added the official.

The case has been registered under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Indian Penal Code.
