New Delhi: In a surprising discovery, a woman from northern Thailand was alarmed to find her nostrils inhabited by hundreds of maggots, following complaints of nasal congestion. The 59-year-old had endured a week of discomfort, attributing it initially to airborne dust. However, after experiencing a nosebleed, she was astounded to witness numerous tiny maggots emerging from her nose.
Seeking immediate medical attention, she visited Nakornping Hospital in Chiang Mai Province, where Dr. Pateemon Thanachaikhan conducted an examination. An X-ray revealed foreign bodies in her nasal passages. Further investigation via an endoscope unveiled over a hundred maggots infesting her nostrils. Prompt removal of the maggots resulted in a significant improvement in her condition.
Dr. Thanachaikhan emphasized the potential severity of the situation, noting that if left untreated, the maggots could have migrated to adjacent organs, including the eyes or brain, leading to disability or even death.
Notably, individuals residing in northern regions of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, are reportedly more susceptible to respiratory ailments like rhinitis and allergies.
This incident echoes a previous case reported in 2022, where a man discovered flesh-eating maggots in his ear canal amid complaints of earache. Upon seeking medical attention, professionals at Hospital Pedro Hispano in Matosinhos, Portugal, identified and removed numerous larvae obstructing his ear canal. Although the larvae were eradicated, the man suffered minor damage to his eardrum due to the invasive infection.
