Lalu to undergo heart surgery, as votes are counted in Bihar by-polls

New Delhi: Lalu Prasad Yadav, the supremo of RJD and former Bihar Chief Minister, has been reportedly unwell and will undergo heart valve replacement surgery at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, as votes are counted in a crucial by-election on Monday August 25, in Bihar.

The hospital said that two of his valves reportedly need replacement however there is no panic and Yadav has been admitted for a scheduled checkup. The family will take a call on any follow-up treatment, a hospital official said.

The 66-year-old politician reportedly avoided extensive road travel because of his heart condition and used a helicopter while campaigning for the by-elections to 10 seats assembly seats in Bihar this month.

He has fought these elections in partnership with longtime rival Nitish Kumar, testing a new anti-BJP alliance ahead of state elections next year. Sources said Yadav was due for valve replacement a few days ago and had delayed his appointment.
