Palakkad: Shilpa, a 29-year-old woman from Kanjiram in Kottayam, was arrested for the murder of her 11-month-old daughter, Shikhanya, in Mavelikkara. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday when Shilpa allegedly strangled her child to death in their rented house.
At 3:18 am, Shilpa sent WhatsApp messages to her former partner, Ajmal, confessing to the crime and expressing remorse. However, Ajmal did not take the messages seriously at the time.

Initially, Shilpa was released after interrogation, as there were no visible signs of injury on the baby’s body, leading authorities to assume a natural cause of death. It was only after the postmortem report revealed suffocation as the cause of death that Shilpa became the prime suspect. In her statement to the police, she mentioned that the child was hindering her work.
Later that morning, Shilpa arrived in Shoranur with the baby’s body in a rented car to meet Ajmal, who works at a tea stall near the railway station. Ajmal noticed that the baby showed no signs of life and immediately alerted the police. Upon examination at the Shoranur government hospital, it was confirmed that the baby had been dead for a considerable period before being brought in.
Suspicion arose when one of Ajmal’s friends observed Shilpa exiting the car, while the taxi driver hurriedly drove away after unloading Shilpa’s luggage. Authorities are now searching for the car and its driver, suspecting their involvement in the tragic incident.
