Kochi: A 23-year-old IT professional was apprehended after allegedly entering a women’s restroom in a popular Kerala mall while wearing a burqa and using his mobile phone to record videos. The individual, who holds a B.Tech degree, faced charges under sections 354(C) (Voyeurism) and 419 (Impersonation) of the IPC, along with Section 66 E of the Information Technology Act, all on the same day, as stated by the police.

The arrested IT worker goes by the name Abhimanyu. He was subsequently presented before a local court, where he was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, according to an officer from Kalamassery police station. The incident occurred at the Lulu Mall on a Wednesday. The accused, employed in a prominent IT company situated at Infopark, entered a women’s restroom while wearing a ‘burqa.’ He placed his mobile phone inside the restroom, contained within a small cardboard box that had a hole for the camera to record visuals. The box was affixed to the restroom door. Afterward, the individual exited the restroom and stood near the main entrance.

Observing his suspicious behavior, security personnel at the mall alerted the police, who arrived swiftly to the scene and interrogated the accused. The questioning revealed that the individual had disguised himself as a woman and used his mobile phone to record scenes within the restroom. Subsequently, both the burqa and the accused’s mobile phone were confiscated, and he was taken into custody. The investigating officer mentioned that the police were looking into the possibility of the accused having engaged in similar acts elsewhere in the past.
