Jallikattu tragedy: Bull gores engineering graduate to death, spectator dies of shock

Chennai: Two persons died during a Jallikattu or the traditional bull taming event in Sivaganga district of Chennai on Sunday. However, while one died after being gored by the raged bull, the other died of shock. Approximately 80 others have been injured.The deceased is 32-year-old engineering graduate Thirunavakarau, a spectator. He was attacked by the bull killing him on the spot. The other man suffered a lethal cardiac arrest as the bull dashed into the barricade, the police said adding that about 80 persons, most of whom were bull tamers have been hospitalised because of injuries of serious and minor nature.

Soon after the bull taming event, pandemonium broke out at the venue when organisers announced the prize winner’s name incorrect. A clash broke out between two factions leaving five injured.

“10 persons have been detained in connection with the clash. The two groups, fighting over the prize, damaged property including bikes kept for prizes,” said police officials.
