India’s COVID positive cases cross five lakh mark

New Delhi: India’s total of coronavirus cases crossed the five lakh-mark on Friday after the country reported its highest single-day spike of over 17,000 cases.

Gujarat saw a number of Covid-19 “records” on Friday, with its total cases jumping over the 30,000 mark to reach 30,158 with 580 new cases detected – matching Sunday’s number which was the highest so far.

Of the new cases, Ahmedabad reported 219, taking its total count over 20,000 mark with 20,058. In the past week or so, the total number of cases detected in Ahmedabad is decreasing from around 300 plus daily to now 200 plus.

Showing no respite, Maharashtra’s Covid-19 cases again jumped sharply from Thursday’s high of 4,841 to 5,024 on Friday while the state’s death toll crossed the 7,000-mark to touch 7,106, health officials said.

The state fatalities again catapulted from the June’s lowest of 62 to 175 Friday, down from the previous day’s highest death figure of 248 notched on June 23.

Earlier, on June 16, the state had reported the highest 1,409 fatalities taking into account reconciliation of earlier deaths, which drastically escalated the toll.

With Friday’s 175 fatalities, the state’s death toll climbed from Thursday’s 6,931 to 7,106 and total cases zoomed past the 1.5-lakh mark to touch 1,52,765 till date, both being the highest in the country.

This comes to roughly one death recorded every 8 minutes and a staggering 209 new cases notched every hour in the state on Friday.

Delhi on Friday recorded 3,460 new coronavirus cases and 63 more deaths in a 24-hour period, taking its total tally of cases to 77,240.

Tamil Nadu’s coronavirus infection count continued its rising trend with 3,645 persons testing positive over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 74,622, the state Health Department said on Friday.

In a statement issued here, the department said 46 more Covid-19 patients died, taking the death toll to 957.

For the past few days, the new infection rate was in the 2,000 range and for the second consecutive day since the pandemic broke in the state, the new infection has crossed the 3,500 mark.
