New Delhi:  A 19 year old teenaged girl was abandoned by her family after being raped by a neighbour last year. This helpless girl who is in the ninth month of her pregnancy, wants the state to take care of her child. 

“I have no money nor means to support the child. My family has left me. The state should provide for this child,” says the rape survivor.She said, “I am just 19. What will do for this baby? How will I provide for it?” She now plans to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking the government to draft a policy to help others like her and thus sparking a wider debate about the future of such children.

After a lower court rejected her plea to terminate the pregnancy, she moved the Delhi High Court, urging the state to take responsibility of the unborn child. And while the court has ordered the government to shift her to a state-run shelter, it has not given any directions if the state will bear the burden of the child.

NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma said, “We can put her in a shelter home.”Looking at her state of plight some of the NGOs have offered her help.

Though the High Court has provided some temporary relief to hert,but the larger question regarding the future of such children still remains unanswered.
