Panaji: Controversy has erupted over the popular electronic dance music (EDM) festival, Sunburn, held in Goa, as a police complaint was filed against the event organizers for allegedly displaying an image of Lord Shiva during the festival. Congress leader Vijay Bhike and AAP Goa chief Amit Palekar expressed their concerns, stating that the depiction of Lord Shiva at the festival, which involves alcohol consumption and loud music, is offensive to the sentiments of the Sanatan Dharma.
Sunburn EDM, held at Vagator in North Goa from December 28 to December 30, faced criticism as images of Lord Shiva were reportedly used in a derogatory manner. Both Bhike and Palekar demanded action against the organizers for hurting religious sentiments. Palekar urged the Goa Chief Minister to register an FIR against the festival organizers, emphasizing that the use of Lord Shiva’s image in a setting promoting alcohol consumption was inappropriate.
As the controversy unfolds, it underscores the challenges of organizing events that intersect with religious sentiments, and it highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity in event planning to avoid unintentional offense. The festival organizers have not yet responded publicly to the allegations.
