New Delhi: Five students including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya are recommended to be rusticated for their alleged role in the JNU controversy by a high-level committee of the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The decision on the recommendation for rustication will be taken by Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and Chief Proctor A Dimri after thorough scrutiny of the suggestions, sources said.

21 students were issued showcause notice after they were found violating the university rules and discipline norms by the committee which was formed on February 10.

Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested on the charges of sedition in the connection with programme organised to protest the hanging of Afzal Guru, convicted for the attack on Parliament. Kumar was released on bail on March 3, whereas Khalid and Bhattacharya are still in judicial custody.

The students are suspended from academic activities but are allowed to stay in the hostels.

The university which turned down the students’ request of a fresh enquiry has maintained that the students will be there chance to appear before the committee. If the students failed to appear, the committee will finalise its recommendations on the basis of the evidence available.
