New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to take stringent actions on those who lure the voters with money and also those voters who accept money, as the laundering of money is increasing in the state upcoming assembly elections.
EC will implement the actions on experimental basis in Karnataka during the upcoming assembly elections, considering both parties are equally responsible in subjecting coercion in exercising valuable votes that is guaranteed to the citizen by the national constitution.
EC aims at creating general awareness in order to discourage the voters in accepting the money in lieu for exercising their franchisee to their favored party candidate. EC is aware that the majority of poor voters who accept money if imprisoned none would come to bail them out, rather than party candidates who will willingly bail their supporters who were engaged in luring the voters with money.
It was during the last assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIDMK lured the voters with chunk of money, but EC did not get any proof. It has prompted EC to advise the home department to amend the Indian Penal Code making it un-bailable offence for both parties accepting and giving money. If this comes into effect, it will put brake on such cases in the forthcoming general elections.
