Chennai: Police in Arumbakkam arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly killing his mother by setting her afire at his residence on Sunday.
Police sources said that D Amarnath Prasad, a cab driver by profession, killed his mother D Sasikala (63) for not finding him a bride and getting him married. He tied her to a chair and set her ablaze. She succumbed to her burns at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital on Sunday evening.
Prasad was living with his mother at Mangala Nagar in Arumbakkam. It is said that he was an alcoholic who used to quarrel with his mother for not getting him married.
Having a leg ailment, the woman had a restricted movement and always sat in the chair, police said.
A drunken Prasad again quarreled on Saturday night and at around 5 am on Sunday, woke up, tied her to a chair and set her ablaze.
Neighbors who heard the cries of the woman rushed her to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where doctors said she sustained 70% burn injuries. Sasikala died around Sunday evening.
The police arrested Prasad based on the statement of Sasikala and has been sent to judicial custody.
