New Delhi: Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has withdrawn from the 2024 US presidential race, citing a disappointing performance in the Iowa Republican caucuses. Ramaswamy, initially a relatively unknown figure in politics, gained traction among Republican voters by emphasizing strong opinions on immigration and advocating for an America-first approach. His campaign strategy closely mirrored that of former President Donald Trump, seeking to tap into the conservative base that had previously propelled Trump to success.

Despite his unexpected emergence as a contender in a Republican field dominated by Trump’s reputation, Ramaswamy faced a setback in the final days leading up to the Iowa caucuses. Trump publicly denounced him, labeling him a “fraud” on his Truth Social platform and asserting that supporting Ramaswamy was tantamount to supporting the “other side.” On the night of the Iowa caucuses, Trump emerged victorious, solidifying his frontrunner position for the Republican nomination.

Born in Ohio to immigrant parents from Kerala, Ramaswamy, a Harvard-educated millionaire, finished fourth in Iowa with approximately 7.7% of the votes. His campaign was marked by a scathing critique of corporate decisions based on social justice and climate change concerns, as outlined in his 2021 bestseller, “Woke, Inc.”

Ramaswamy’s fellow Republican presidential hopefuls, including former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who shares Indian heritage, expressed frustration with him during debates. Haley took a jab at Ramaswamy, saying, “Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber.” Despite initial momentum, Ramaswamy’s bid for the presidency ultimately faltered in the face of Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party.
