New Delhi: In a significant move, the government is gearing up to present a bill in parliament this week, aiming to assert its control over services and officers’ postings in Delhi. The contentious bill, previously issued as an ordinance, has now become a focal point for a united opposition against the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The proposed legislation, officially titled the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, aims to establish an authority responsible for the transfers and postings of senior officers within the Delhi government. The draft bill has already been shared with Members of Parliament, setting the stage for intense debates in the coming days.

The opposition coalition INDIA, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as a key player, has vehemently opposed the bill. Joining forces with other opposition parties, including the Congress, they are preparing to challenge the government’s legislative agenda in the Lok Sabha.

The ongoing Manipur ethnic conflict has also added fuel to the fire, with the opposition demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the issue in parliament. While Home Minister Amit Shah expressed willingness to discuss the matter, the opposition rejected the offer and instead moved a no-confidence motion against the government, hoping to compel PM Modi to speak on the Manipur violence.

The opposition’s discontent stems from the government’s insistence on pushing ahead with its legislative plans despite the no-confidence motion pending before the house. The Lok Sabha Speaker’s admission of the motion has intensified the standoff between the government and the opposition.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi issued a challenge to the opposition, daring them to defeat the government bills on the floor of the house if they believe they have enough support in the Lok Sabha. He criticized the last-minute move of the no-confidence motion, arguing that it should not hinder the government’s regular business in parliament.

As tensions rise, members of the newly formed opposition coalition INDIA, who recently visited the violence-hit region of Manipur, are expected to present more evidence to challenge the Modi government’s stance when the parliamentary session convenes today. The stage is set for intense deliberations as the government and the opposition face off in what could be a defining moment in the nation’s political landscape.
