New Delhi: A division of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the creation of India’s lightest bulletproof vest, capable of guarding against the highest threat level 6, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.
The statement from the Ministry of Defence outlines that this innovative jacket is the result of a new design methodology employing unique materials and processes.
Quoting the Ministry of Defence’s statement, it reads, “DRDO’s Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), located in Kanpur, has achieved a milestone by producing the lightest bulletproof vest in the country, providing protection against 7.62 x 54 R API ammunition, classified as level 6 as per BIS 17051 standards. The recent successful testing of this bulletproof jacket at TBRL, Chandigarh, adhered to BIS 17051-2018 regulations.”

Detailing the features, the statement highlights that the front hard armour panel (HAP) of the jacket is capable of withstanding multiple hits (up to six shots) of 7.62×54 R API sniper rounds in both ICW (in-conjunction with) and standalone configurations.
Moreover, it describes the ergonomically designed front HAP, constructed with a monolithic ceramic plate and polymer backing, which enhances comfort and wearability during operations.
“The areal density of ICW hard armour panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively,” the statement further notes.
The announcement concludes by stating that the Department of Defence R&D secretary and DRDO chairman have extended congratulations to DMSRDE for the successful development of this groundbreaking bulletproof jacket.
