New Delhi: Following the rejection of the Centre’s proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton at MSP by farmers leading the ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher issued a stern warning to the BJP-led government, holding them accountable for any consequences. Talks with the government failed, prompting the protesters to declare their intention to continue their march towards Delhi on Wednesday, February 21.
Expressing frustration with the government’s apparent reluctance to engage in meaningful dialogue, Pandher highlighted the obstacles faced by the farmers, likening the situation in Haryana to that of Kashmir due to the heavy-handed measures taken by the authorities to prevent their entry into Delhi.
The proposal presented by a panel of three Union ministers to buy certain crops at MSP for five years was rebuffed by the protesting farmers, who deemed it as an attempt to divert attention from their core demand for MSP as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission report.
Pandher emphasized the peaceful nature of their protest and reiterated their demand to proceed to Delhi, emphasizing the farmers’ determination to see their demands met.
The farmers’ demands include the enactment of a law to ensure MSP for all crops, pension for farmers, debt waiver, and the reinstatement of the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, among others.
Despite the farmers’ peaceful intentions, tensions have escalated, with clashes reported in Haryana earlier this month. Pandher urged the government to heed their demands, warning that continued oppression could lead to widespread discontent among the populace regarding those in power.
