New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally spoke on the electoral bond issue, a topic of contention and debate during this Lok Sabha election. Opposition parties are targeting the ruling BJP government, accusing it of being the biggest beneficiary of the scheme and misusing its power.
In an interview with Tamil Nadu’s Thanthi TV, the Prime Minister openly denied that the electoral bond issue had caused a setback to his government. He stated that no system is perfect and any shortcomings could be improved.
He mentioned that the opposition, who are ‘dancing’ over the matter, would regret it. When asked if the revelation of electoral bond details had caused a setback to his government, he responded, “Tell me what we have done that I should see it as a setback? I firmly believe that those dancing over it (bond details) and taking pride in it are going to repent.”
The PM supported the electoral bond system, stating that it was due to the system implemented by his government that the sources of funding and details of beneficiaries could be found. He admitted that no system is perfect and that there can be shortcomings that could be improved upon.
The issue of electoral bonds has become the opposition’s biggest weapon in to fight against the Modi government and they are using it to their advantage in the elections.
The opposition claims that many companies have turned out to be the biggest buyers of these bonds after facing probes by autonomous investigative agencies.
Modi stated in the interview that he works for the country and Tamil Nadu is a big strength. He mentioned that no one should see politics in everything he does.
He stated that he would not initiate a plethora of development works in the Northeast states if voters were his concern. He highlighted that he had visited the hilly states more than all other prime ministers combined and claimed that his ministers had visited the states over 150 times.
PM Modi expressed confidence that Tamil Nadu has decided to vote for BJP-NDA and those votes will be pro-BJP, not anti-DMK, citing the work his government has done over the past 10 years despite not having a single municipal candidate in the southern state.
PM Modi praised Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, saying he is attracting youth and admired him for his selfless service.
Modi also spoke about the politicization of the Tamil language, taking a swipe at the opposition for labeling the BJP as not giving importance to regional languages and promoting Hindi. He stated that as Tamil Nadu’s cuisine has reached globally, its dialect should be promoted similarly.
