Amid rising temperatures, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has taken proactive steps to safeguard the well-being of students and staff in schools. With stringent instructions issued to both government and private institutions, a comprehensive set of guidelines has been introduced to address the challenges posed by the impending heat wave. These directives, totaling nine, cover various aspects aimed at maintaining a conducive learning environment while protecting against the adverse effects of extreme heat.

Outlined by the Directorate of Education, the following nine instructions are to be diligently followed by all educational institutions:

  1. Heat Wave Prevention Posters: Schools are mandated to prominently display posters educating students on preventive measures against heat-related illnesses.
  2. Suspension of Afternoon Assemblies: Schools are instructed to suspend assemblies during scorching afternoon hours to minimize students’ exposure to intense heat.
  3. Discontinuation of Open-air Classes: Outdoor classes are to be halted to shield students from direct sunlight and oppressive heat.
  4. Limitation of Outdoor Activities: When a heat wave is declared, schools must refrain from organizing any outdoor activities to prevent students from overexertion in extreme weather conditions.
  5. Availability of Drinking Water: Schools must ensure the availability of clean drinking water at all times, with a focus on the proper functioning of water purification systems.
  6. Scheduled Water Breaks: Students should be granted regular water breaks during class hours to prevent dehydration.
  7. Parental Awareness Campaign: Parents are to be sensitized through School Management Committee (SMC) members about the importance of ensuring their children cover their heads with appropriate headgear when exposed to direct sunlight.
  8. First Aid Preparedness: School first aid kits must include Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to promptly address any signs of heat-related illnesses amongst students.
  9. Immediate Reporting of Cases: In the event of any heat-related illness, schools are required to promptly report cases to the nearest health facility or hospital for immediate medical attention.

These directives underscore the Education Department’s dedication to prioritizing student welfare and safety in challenging weather conditions. By implementing these measures, schools aim to mitigate the risks associated with heat waves and ensure a conducive learning environment for all students.
