Following a brief battle at Dhulsiras hamlet in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka, the Delhi Police crime branch on Friday nabbed an armed robber and his associate, according to top police sources knowledgeable of the operation.

Since news of the armed robbery case in Ashok Vihar, northwest Delhi, last year, numerous teams from the district police, crime branch, and special cell had been looking for Miraj, who was running away.

The western range-II (WR-II) team members of the crime branch received information late on Thursday night that the absconding suspect, Miraj, would be visiting Dhulsiras village in Dwarka with his buddy, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) (crime) Sanjay Bhatia.

The information was shared with area police inspector Akshay Kumar, and a team was formed to arrest Miraj, said Bhatia. Around 2.30am on Friday, the police team laid a trap in the area, and nearly 15 minutes later, they spotted Miraj and his associate and asked them to surrender, the ACP said. However, Miraj fired two rounds at the police party, hitting Kumar’s bulletproof vest, and in return fire, the inspector shot Miraj’s leg.

The team members overpowered his associate and arrested the duo, said the ACP, adding that two firearms were recovered from their possession. Miraj was admitted to a hospital for treatment, he said.

At least five masked, armed men stormed into a businessman’s Ashok Vihar home early on May 7 of last year, took the entire family hostage at gunpoint, and stole Rs. 3 crore from him.

A month after a case was opened, the crime branch detained four individuals. But according to the police, Miraj, the main suspect, was running away.

Given the suspicion that Miraj had run away to hide in Bangladesh, the Delhi police declared a reward of Rs. 2 lakh.
