A day before the commencement of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Manipur, the Congress emphasized that the initiative was more of an ideological journey than an electoral one. They asserted that the yatra was a response to what they termed as the “anyay kaal” (injustice era) of the Narendra Modi government’s 10-year rule. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, accompanied by former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, State Party Chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh, and Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam, addressed a press conference to underline the ideological nature of the yatra.
Ramesh highlighted the country’s current challenge, stating that it faces an ideology characterized by polarization, economic disparities, and political authoritarianism. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promising a ‘golden era’ (‘amrit kaal’) while, according to Ramesh, the reality of the past decade has been an ‘injustice era’ (‘anyay kaal’).
The Congress leader clarified that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra was motivated by political, economic, and social injustices of the last 10 years, emphasizing that it was not merely an electoral campaign but an expression of ideological opposition.
The yatra, set to traverse 100 Lok Sabha constituencies in 15 states, covering 6,713 km through buses and on foot, is deemed by the party as transformative, akin to Rahul Gandhi’s earlier cross-country march. The Congress attributed the need for the yatra to the government’s alleged suppression of people’s issues in Parliament and expressed its aim to re-establish the constitutional principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Originally planned to commence from the Palace Grounds in Imphal, the yatra’s starting point was moved to a private ground in Manipur’s Thoubal district due to conditional approval from the state government, which restricted the number of participants. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is scheduled to span 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats, and 337 assembly segments in 67 days, concluding in Mumbai on March 20 or 21.
