New Delhi: During the CBI’s International Conference on “Evolving Common Strategies to Combat Corruption and Crime” in New Delhi held on Tuesday November 12, the CBI Director Ranjit Sinha astonishingly compared legalizing betting to enjoying rape.

When asked about Ethics and integrity in sports needed a law and role of CBI he made a contradictory statement saying that, “There is no harm in legalizing betting in the country, as there was no point in a ban which cannot be enforced comparatively if you can’t prevent rape, enjoy it.”

His radically shocking comparison between legalizing betting and ‘enjoying rape’ has put him into the triggered controversy.

Over which he further questioned, “If we can have lottery in states, if we can have casinos at holiday resorts, if the government can declare schemes of voluntary disclosure for black money, so what’s the harm in legalizing betting?”

Supporting Sinha ace cricketer Rahul Dravid, who was special guest at the panel said, “Legalizing betting is one subject that the law enforcement agencies must decide but  if legalizing betting will lead to better governance and reduce corruption then I feel it’s justified.”

On the same issue, Ravi Sawani, chief of BCCI’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit expressed his view point stating that legalizing betting will in no way help reducing corruption from the game.

He clarified in his presentation saying that “A legal bet from one exchange in the UK is about Rs 440 crore whereas in each IPL game for the tournament, bets are worth Rs 66,000 crore approximately, which includes illegal betting groups as well.”
