New Delhi : After much debate and divisions, BJP president Rajnath Singh seems all set to announce the appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as chairman of the partys election campaign committee at the National Executive meet on Sunday. The BJP also plans to announce Modi as the prime ministerial candidate after the announcement of general elections by the central government. A section of pro-Modi leaders had demanded that he be declared the partys prime ministerial candidate.
A last ditch attempt is being made within the BJP to persuade Advani, who skipped the partys National Executive meeting in Goa completely. The ball now seems to be in party president Rajnath Singhs court. Advanis absence as also that of Yashwant Sinha, Jaswant Singh, Uma Bharati and Shatrughan Sinha over shadowed its 400-member strong National Executive which formally discussed economic, foreign and other issues including the Maoists problem.
Advani had suggested the formation of two campaign committees, one for the upcoming assembly elections in five states this year-end, led by Modi, and another for the 2014 general elections. When asked if any key decision on Modi was taken on the first day of the National Executive meeting, sources said that, Narendra Modi is a member of BJP Parliamentary Board. If party wants to give Modi any other role, it will be announced to the media.
