New Delhi: In a desperate bid to stall his extradition, fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi’s lawyers have now told the UK Court that the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai is infested with rats and insects and shifting hm there will be a clear violation of human rights.

About three days ago, the lawyers had claimed that Nirav Modi is suffering from a ‘serious mental health condition’ and that Arthur Road jail is not an option at all because the jail has no psychiatrist.

The Westminster Magistrates Court in London has been informed by the Indian authorities that if extradited,
Nirav Modi will be kept at barrack number 12 of Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai which has been constructed
especially for economic offenders.

However, Nirav Modi’s lawyer have alleged that if he is lodged in the said barrack, it will be a clear violation of human rights as the jail premises has uncovered drains and a slum in the vicinity, making it “extremely noisy”.

All of these claims of rat and insect infested cells, uncovered drains etc have been proven wrong earlier by the Indian agencies through a video of the Arthur Jail.

The court has asked the Crown Prosecution Service to submit a recent report on Arthur Road Jail which will be
taken up for hearing in September.
