New Delhi: Renowned journalist and TV Anchor Arnab Goswami resigned from Editors’ Guild of India, on live television, during an ongoing debate on Repubic TV, on Monday night.
The debate was being held on Palghar lynching episode and as the debate was on, Goswami made an announcement.
Attacking the Guild and its Chairman Shekar Gupta for the silence over various issues of national interest, Goswani said: “Shekar Gupta, You hear it from me first, whatever credibility is remaining of the Guild has been destroyed by its abject silence.”
He then went on to say: “I resign from the Editors Guild of India for its absolute compromise on editorial ethics, for being an organisation that is only operating in self-interest. I have been a member of the Guild for long time.”
Continuing his tirade on Shekar Gupta, Goswami said: ” I accuse you Shekar Gupta of leading the compromise of Indian journalism by not speaking up on incidents like this. The day Shekar Gupta has the courage to speak up against fake news stories being spread during COVID, then the guild is of any value. Otherwise, it is nothing but a group of ‘has beens’ who have refused to take a position on issues that matter.”
Some of the guests on the debate panel supported Goswami’s decision by clapping after his announcement.
