New Delhi: Petitioner Shabnam Rani was provided security and medical care on the orders of the Supreme Court, as she had faced an acid attack on September 13 at Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. The order was rolled out on September 17 for her protection as she is facing threats following her struggle against the Nikah Halala and the Triple Talaq case.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to provide optimum protection to Shabnam. She is said to be provided with the police personnel when she travels outside the state. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has taken this measure following the court order.

She will also be given a compensation under the schemes meant for acid attack survivors.

Shabnam Rani’s fight began when she was given Triple Talaq by her husband and forced to perform Nikah Halala with her brother-in-law. She was later attacked by her in-laws for not performing the unethical practice.

Several cases have been filed against the same act suggesting that it was against the fundamental rights conferred by the Indian Constitution.

This practice involves a system of remarriage with another person and attaining a divorce from him, so as to remarry the first husband.

The demand for protection is also being heard from other petitioners. The SC, however, has not provided a concrete judgment on the plea but has directed the state government to act accordingly and take immediate action against the attackers of the petitioners. It has also directed the police department to keep a close eye on the miscreants and prevent any untoward incidents.
