Bijapur, Chhattisgarh: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 12-year-old girl died after she walked 150 kms from Telangana to reach her native village Bijapur in Chhattisgarh in wake of lockdown in the country.
What was even more disheartening was that the young girl succumbed merely 14-kms (one hour) away from her village.
Jamlo Madkam worked in the chilly fields in Telangana and was supplementing the income of her family. When the lockdown was extened till May 3, Jamlo panicked and decided to reach back home by hook or by crook.
On April 15, Jamlo started her long journey along with 11 others. The group walked for three days and took the precarious forest routes to evade the highways.
However, as per sources, on Saturday afternoon Jamlo stopped walking after she developed excruciating pain in the stomach.
When her body was taken in an ambulance to a hospital, the doctors said that she was severely dehydrated and malnourished.
Her COVID tests have come negative, informed medical officers while a few who walked with her said that she often refused to consume food.
The government has announced Rs one lakh compensation to Jamlo’s family.
