Urologists at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), located in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, have achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully removing 418 kidney stones from a 60-year-old patient with only 27% kidney function.

Faced with the challenge of an unprecedented number of kidney stones and severe kidney function impairment, the patient, Mallesh, underwent a groundbreaking procedure. Instead of opting for conventional and more invasive methods, the medical team, led by Dr. K Purna Chandra Reddy, Dr. Gopal R. Tak, and Dr. Dinesh M, decided to employ Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a minimally invasive technique.

PCNL involves making small incisions through which specialized instruments, including a miniature camera and laser probes, are inserted into the kidney. This allows surgeons to precisely target and remove the stones without the need for extensive surgical openings, thus reducing trauma and expediting the patient’s recovery.

The procedure, lasting over two hours, saw the surgical team meticulously extract each stone, navigating through the intricate urinary tract network. Advanced imaging technology and state-of-the-art equipment played a crucial role in addressing the extensive stone burden while safeguarding the delicate balance of kidney function.
