Mangalore: Several students belonging to the physiotherapy colleges in Mangalore, which are affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore expressed displeasure, citing “improper evaluation of exam papers of most students and for scrapping re-evaluation system”.

In the examination results declared on October 1 and 7, students of Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) have found that most of them failed in the exams held in April and May this year. Strangely, the entire batch did not clear the exams in some college, while in others, barely a student or two have managed to pass.

It’s for the second time in a row, RGUHS is in the news. In August 2014, the university had to face the brunt after some answer scripts of PG exams were found to have been re-stitched after extra sheets were added to them. The exam results were delayed on this account.

“The result is terribly shocking and unexpected. We did well in the practical exams. Only two students in my batch have passed”, says a student from Mangalore.

While, few students feel answer script scam as the reason behind such type of evaluation. A second year physiotherapy student said, “For a wrongdoing of few persons, university should not jeopardize our career. Only 11 students out of 44 have cleared exam in my batch”, he added.

Another student observes that the unprofessional way of evaluating answer sheets may indirectly benefit other private colleges. “The Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT) students who want to pursue higher studies will automatically be discouraged to join PG courses in the colleges which are affiliated to RGUHS. Hence, the university must stop playing with the life of students, he adds.

Besides, students are not happy for the remark issued by RGUHS Registrar (Evaluation) S. Sachidanand on re-totaling of answer scripts. A student, who requested anonymity said, “Re-totaling does not serve the purpose, the university should make provision of challenge evaluation. It looks the university is afraid to make such provision as more number of students clearing the exam, may again bring bad name to the university”, he adds.

However, the academic council of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) had scrapped the system of Challenge Evaluation (CE) in 2010, stating that it caused dissatisfaction among students, parents and teachers. Hence, the university opted to use re-totaling method.

On Wednesday, students from many colleges across the state, which are affiliated to the RGUHS will stage demonstrations in the premises of the university, requesting the Vice-Chancellor to introduce challenge evaluation.
