Mangaluru: The Yenepoya Research Centre under the aegis of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), hosted the MiCON 2024 National Conference on January 24, 2024. The conference, titled “Microbes for a Sustainable Future,” attracted over 120 participants from various parts of the nation, representing diverse fields of research from the microbiology community.
The inauguration was attended by Dr B.H. Sripathi Rao (Pro Vice-Chancellor), Dr K.S. Gangadhara Somayaji (Registrar), chief guests Dr Yogesh S. Shouche (Honorary Scientist, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune and Deputy Director, SKAN Research Trust, Bengaluru) and Dr Niyaz Ahmed (Professor, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad).
The event hosted Dr Laxmikant Chatra and Dr Sham S. Bhat, both Senior Professors and Principals of Yenepoya Dental College and Dr Rouchelle Tellis, Professor and HOD of the Department of Microbiology, Hospital Infection Control Officer, Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital.
Director, Yenepoya Research Centre Dr Rekha PD, as Chairman, Assistant Professor Dr Asif Hameed as Secretary and Associate Professor, YRC Dr Bhagwan Rekadwad, as Joint Secretary were instrumental in organizing the MiCON 2024.
The first half of the MiCON 2024 conference was marked by an enlightening keynote address by Dr Yogesh S. Shouche on “Microbe-based Approaches for a Sustainable Future: A Dream Becoming Reality.” Following this, Dr Niyaz Ahmed delivered an insightful talk on “Evolution and Adaption – From Bacterial Virulence to Cognitive Excellence: Who is at the Anvil?”
In the second half, Dr Rouchelle Tellis addressed the audience with an invited talk on “Microbial Challenges for Sustainable Healthcare.” This segment was complemented by oral presentations from participants representing five different states, showcasing the diverse range of ongoing research in the field of microbiology. Additionally, more than 20 poster presentations were displayed, covering various research topics in microbiology.
The conference recognized outstanding contributions through the presentation of the Best Oral and Poster Awards. Budding microbiologists were acknowledged with the presentation of the Budding Microbiologist Award. The event concluded on a high note with a vote of thanks delivered by Associate Professor, YRC Dr Bhagwan Rekadwad, Joint Secretary, MiCON 2024.
MiCON 2024 provided a platform for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences, fostering collaboration among microbiologists and highlighting the crucial role of microbes in building a sustainable future.
The success of this conference underscored Yenepoya’s commitment to advancing scientific research and the significance of microbiology in addressing contemporary challenges.
