Moodbidire: Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET) inaugurated ‘Srusti Nature Club’ in the college by inviting Saalumarada Thimmakka, the woman who single-handedly planted a thousand saplings and nurtured them to become trees.
“Planting and nurturing a tree is virtuous deed. If you care for trees as you care for your own loved one, the annuity you receive is priceless”, said Nadoja award winner Saalumarada Thimmakka addressing the students.
“Trees are the best things we can leave behind as we move on in our lives. Elders should encourage students to take up the cause of saving environment”, she noted.
She said, “Children need to be taught not just to plant trees, but also to nurture them. What nature provides with is not for humans alone, it belongs to every living organism.”
Expressing her annoyance over the fact that her request for a hospital in her village Hulikal is not met, she said though government showed interest in the initial stages, it was totally sidelined and ignored after time passed. She urged the government to fulfill her demand as early as possible, so that it would help rural people.
She sang few folk songs to explain how nature provided for all its creatures without discrimination. Later she was felicitated in the function by the club members.
Alva’s Education Managing Trustee Vivek Alva, AIET Principal Dr Peter Fernandes, Sristi Club Coordinator Yuvarj were present among others.
